Achieve a Thick, Green, Moss-Free Lawn

Depending on the area you live in, you may have come across what has been referred to as “nature’s carpet” in your lawn – in more scientific words, you might be dealing with moss!

Mosses are a kind of small, flowerless, spore-bearing plant. They are typically found in moist, shady locations (like a forest) on the west coast. Moss forms dense green clumps that resemble a thick carpet. When pressure is applied and taken away, the moss will “bounce” back like a cushion.

There are hundreds of species of mosses found in temperate climates. However, only a few are troublesome as lawn weeds.

Though some people do like the look of moss for decorative purposes, it can be pesky for those who wish to avoid it on their property due to its tendency to spread spores through the wind.

Moss may be a problem wherever one or more of the following situations are present:

  • Low levels of nitrogen

  • Poor air circulation

  • Excessive shade

  • Low soil pH

  • Poor drainage or compaction

  • Low mowing height

  • Any maintenance practice that puts stress on the grass plants

Controlling Moss on Your Lawn

So you have unwanted moss growing on your lawn. How can Weed Man help?

Through a carefully designed program, controlling moss in moist or shady turf, compacted soil, or soil with low pH levels can be achieved. In conjunction with Weed Man’s integrated pest management-based approach, a moss control service can be applied when and where needed by a licensed and trained Weed Man professional.

Your local Weed Man technician will apply a moss control product in the early spring or fall. Once the moss turns black following the application, it must be raked up and the bare areas should be renovated.

What Can I Do to Prevent the Moss from Returning?

The next step is to find and correct the underlying problem encouraging moss growth in the first place.

Homeowners are encouraged to do the following in order to help prevent the return of moss:

1. Prune trees to reduce shade and increase air circulation

2. Aerate to improve drainage

3. Have your soil tested to determine pH

4. Adjust lawn mower to cut at or above 5 cm (2 inches)
